The contents of the electronic process course were as follows: 1) LED lottery draw plate soldering – the product had shock sensors and random stop functions; 2) Radio circuit soldering and assembly  the radio had AM and FM tuning function; 3) MCU-controlled LED clock soldering and assembly  the product had an LED light display, date, time and music alarm functions. This course included checking the function of the LED plate, radio and clock and ensuring that the circuits were all properly soldered.

Through this training, we learned the basics of soldering by applying these skills on LED lottery draw plate, radio, and a simple circular clock. At the same time, we also learned to identify different electronic components, to carry out quality inspection, and how to assemble machines. This allowed us to cultivate our practical abilities and to learn the importance of being rigorous, as well as improving our ability to solve problems. Together these skills help lay a good foundation for our future careers.

During the training process, we mainly focused on learning how to solder circuit boards. We made alarm clocks, radios and LED plate. Although the training time was quite short, I felt like I benefited from it a lot. Soldering a circuit board actually does not need much technical knowledge, but requires that you are patient and meticulous. When I soldered the circuit, I made a lot of mistakes at the beginning, such as welding the electrical components on the copper clad surface of the circuit, and not ensuring that the chip’s gap was the same as the schematic diagram of the copper clad surface. Due to my lack of experience and patience at the beginning, virtual welding also happened frequently. However, by making these mistakes I learned to appreciate that rigor, seriousness and patience are very important for an engineering student.

Through this practical training, I encountered many practical problems, such as the failure of soldering feet resulting in the whole circuit being unable to run, and accidentally picking out the copper wire in the circuit board and needing floaters to save the circuit. These are the kinds of mistakes which are not easy to learn from books, so this course helped us improve our practical understanding of soldering. It also taught us that the quality of a product is judged not only on whether it can work, but also on whether the product process is perfect. At the same time, this course taught us to pay attention to safety issues, such as developing the habit of turning off the power supply to the soldering iron when it is not in use and not leaving personal items on the laboratory table, especially cups of water, in order to avoid fire or other disasters.

After the one-week-long electronic process course, the students have learned about PCB, resistors, capacitors, sensors, MCUs, and LEDs. The course helped them to understand the engineering applications of the electric circuit theory and it improved their practical abilities. This course provided a good beginning for their engineering careers
