Classes focus

Classes focus on developing fluency and accuracy in alllanguage skills for academic and professional purposes. Considerable time willbe spent on grammar, reading, writing, and oral discussion. Students will takepart in class lectures, group work, pair work, and individual study. Inaddition to a homeroom academic skills class, students will have one or twoadditional courses. 

Are you a serious student who would like to focus ondeveloping academic fluency and accuracy in all English language skills? Thenthe 2-week Academic English program is the program for you. Academic Englishstudents will spend considerable time on grammar, reading, and writing.High-intermediate and advanced English proficiency students are welcome to takethis program. A student’s English proficiency is determined during orientationat the time the student arrives at UC San Diego English Language Institute(ELI). The dates of the 2-week Academic English program align with 2-weekbreaks between sessions in the 8-week English language program schedule, makingit a good program for continuing students.

Required Courses:

In the 15-hour/week part-time Academic English schedule,only one additional class will be selected instead of the usual two additionalclasses; research paper writing class is not likely to be offered during theschedule of this less intensive program.

Advisory About Variable Enrollments

Enrollment numbers in our Academic, Conversation, andConversation and Fluency programs vary greatly from month to month. If ourplacement tests indicate that your English proficiency level does not permitplacement in the original 2-week program class, we may place you in 2 weeks ofstudy in a corresponding 4-week or 8-week program, or we may provide acombination of classes and individual tutoring to ensure a full-time program of15 or 20 hours per week for 2 weeks. Alternatively, we may decide to place all2-week program students in level-appropriate classes in a corresponding 4-weekor 8-week program in order to provide a program of 15 or 20 hours per week for2 weeks. When this happens your 2-week program will have the features describedfor the new 4-week or 8-week program, not the features described for theoriginal program. The tuition and fees for your 2-week program enrollment willremain the same.
