University of California, Santa Cruz: A liberal arts system with big university resources

01

While Berkeley might be the most esteemed of all the UCs and the strongest overall, each school actually has its own individual strengths that vary. These strengths become more apparent the more specific the study. For example, a student interested in studying marine biology should strongly consider attending LA, San Diego, or Santa Cruz – the only three UCs that actually have marine biology programs. Agriculture programs exist only at Davis and Riverside. Irvine is the only school with a criminology program. San Diego, Davis, LA, and Irvine are all tied to their own medical schools, while Berkeley, LA, Davis, and Irvine also house law schools. These can provide extra resources as well for undergraduates.

02

At Santa Cruz, specifically, there is the Jack Baskin School of Engineering – dedicated to creating future engineers that think outside the box to solve societal issues. Faculty and students get to work with a variety of technology corporations (such as Amazon, Cisco, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung, Seagate, Western Digital etc.)and proximity to Silicon Valley provides collaboration opportunities for students. The student population of 16,952 undergraduates is comparatively smaller than other UC’s, which will provide students ample face-time with their professors and research opportunities. In addition, in an increasingly global world, it is important for students to have active engagement in societal issues. At UC Santa Cruz, student activism is highly encouraged and students learn how to advocate for themselves and issues they care about.

David Joiner, Assistant Director of Global Admissions, visited VMA and gave the attendees a breakdown of what the UC’s are looking for. The most important point to remember is the Activities List. When filling out this section, the student should emphasize what they did and for how long. The Activities List is used to learn about the student in the context they live in, it is not about how many activities they do. Quality is more important than quantity, students should make sure the activities they participate in are meaningful and impact them on a personal level. Admissions Officers have read numerous applications and they know when a student is exaggerating the importance of an activity. It’s best to be genuine in the application and highlight how a difference was made in the community through participating in the activity.

“Progressive, bold, fearless education that benefits both the individual and the planet.”
