Signing Ceremony
After nearly a year of preparation: interviews, selections, curriculum arrangement, etc., Wake Forest University summer program finally officially landed in the International Department of Beijing No.35 High School this summer. Known as “South Harvard”, Wake Forest University ranks in the top 30 in the US NEWS ranking for 21 years. WFU emphasizes on the students’ true academic performance and comprehensive ability, rather than merely the standardized tests score. This concept coincides with the training model in Beijing No.35 High School. Therefore, UCSE created great opportunities for two schools for more in-depth exchanges, and they decided to launch the WFU summer program to allow students to experience curriculum and culture of American universities in advance.
On July 15th, 2018, the signing ceremony began. The principal Victoria Wang, the vice provost of WFU Dr. Kline Harrison, and the CEO of UCSE Tony Wang gave us a speech, and expressed their good wish for the cooperation.
After that, Beijing No.35 High School International Department, UCSE and the Wake Forest University signed the contract which signifies that the three parties will work together in order to create a better future for international education.

学习
Study
During the two-week summer program, students communicated with Wake Forest University’s professors face-to-face, and experienced the learning model of American universities. We have four courses, including Research Methods, Culture-Based Course, Academic Writing and SAT Test Prep Course. In addition to the SAT Course, all courses are taught by professors from Wake Forest University, and the grade of Research Methods Course can be converted into college credits.
These courses have high requirements on students’ English ability, independent learning and management abilities. On the basis of three-hour English courses everyday, students were also required to comprehend knowledge, read 15-20 pages of relevant materials and preview the course, as well as complete the homework, take exams and term paper. In the Research Method Course, Dr. Blumenthal mainly introduced two types of social science exploration methods including experimental methods and non-experimental methods, and focused on operational definition, internal validity and other terms, so that students could master scientific inquiry methods, and learn to question carefully and ask for evidence boldly.

Additionally, the Study Hall provided students an opportunity to answer questions and students gradually learned a lot from discussing and questioning with Dr. Blumenthal and four teaching assistants.
In addition to the academic course, this summer program also added cultural exchange course. Dr. Anna introduced the teaching and cultural differences between China and the United States from the aspects of cultural iceberg, as well as the thinking mode, communication languages, campus activities, etc., so as to help students better understand and adapt to college life in advance.
Although two-week English courses is a great challenge for us, no one had given up. We began the self-study at 8 am every morning, and learned more than 8 hours until 12 o’clock every night, even discuss questions during meals and rest. Before exams and Term Paper deadline, it was the key time for students to review, ask and answer questions, as well as have a brainstorm together at Evening Event. All the students were willing to help each other, share notes, and sort out the main points and Paper, as that their inspiration came out.
活动
Activities
Except for the intense study, we had many extracurricular activities. On July 18, Dr. Nelson, TA– Dakota and Rupert, and students played a fierce soccer game against with No.35 teachers. Teacher team defeated the student team in the first half with a score of 0-3. While in the second half, the score was changed to 2:3 by the captain, but the result was decided at 2:5 due to lack of strength.
On the second day, Students from WFU summer program had a basketball match against Beijing No.35 teachers. The score went up and down, however, the teachers’ strong defense prevented the students from attacking, and finally, the game ended at 32:42.
On July 22nd, we went out to visit Beijing in groups. As the host, we took the professors and TAs to visit the Forbidden city, Tiananmen square and other historical sites. They marvel at the splendor, solemn and beauty of these historical sites, and kept taking photos during the trip. The trip quickly brought students closer to each other.
Of course, we can’t ignore the social events every night. The game “Did you ever do?” enable us to know each other better. The “Questions about university and application” let us have a clear plan for our future…In short, in this summer program, we not only studied academic courses but also made plenty of new friends through various activities, and became good friends with professors and TAs.
The end is a new beginning
“Any questions?” 我们最难忘记的是他说的“People are people, we are all human-being”。
Along with the broadcasting of the electronic photo album, the Wake Forest Summer Program also came to an end. First, Professor Anna said she was impressed by the 20 students. “Any questions?” This is the first sentence of Dr. B’s each class. He also used this sentence as the beginning of the speech, making us feel that we have returned to yesterday. The most unforgettable sentence by him was “People are people; we are all human-being.”We watch and appreciate this elaborate “thank you” video, hoping that time would stop at this moment. Each student said “Thank you for meeting this summer, Wake Forest University.” In the video and used gestures to draw out the shape of W, passing on the gratitude, and letting the memory last forever.
Finally, we left the most brilliant smile in the graduation photo as a good memory!
Let’s listen to the feelings of the students!
What I’ve gained, is about fact and procedure. Consume info which currently I’ve been reading materials, what I’ve learnt about making notes had been put into practice, using green, black pen and pencil to highlight in notes making, explore by ourselves in the ocean of knowledge. In addition, I have to read every sentence carefully, catch the gist and focus on details, or I could get lost.
Thank you all for completing the larger picture of my universe.

The most important thing I learned in this course is to give operational definitions to a term. Because everyone has different views towards one thing, for example, people may define best from different perspectives. In order to let everyone on a same page and understand what I’m going to talk about, it’s important to narrow down and specify it. Not only in academic research, but also helpful in daily life. Dr.B is a really nice professor, who changes my impression on the university professor. I think I am more confident to attend the university.
Athena
In this WFU summer program, I not only learned the research method of social science subjects systematically, but also some tips for my life. We learn a term called experimenter bias. When the researchers meet the participants, they tend to give a hint for them to bias their answer or interpret their result differently. In our daily life, we would like to judge one people just based on their appearance but that should not happen. We need to view everyone equally.
Jessie
I learned to be skeptical to everything around me. We can never base on our intuition to judge anything. Being skeptical is not only important for science, but also important in our life. In addition, I learn to ask questions and be brave to talk to the professor. All the professors and TAs are not that intimidating. They are friendly and willing to clarify any questions you have. Nobody is willing to make friends with people who are shy.
Frank
I have a big improvement on my language, including writing skills, listening skills, speaking skills and reading skills. This program makes me have a good preparation for my major because I am going to major in science so that I can use these methods to do lots of science experiments.
