中世纪前期的西方学校
中世纪前期，学校完全掌握在教会手中，各个学校的主管（称为“学监”或“督学”）直接服从于主教或修道院长。这些学校首先培养修道院的修士或修女，培养依附于教务会的青年教士，教务会将在以后把青年教士培养成高级教士。学校总体水平都不高，只能实施读、写、算初等教学，培养年轻教士承担其礼拜仪式任务。教学的基本内容包括七艺（即“三艺”语法、辩证法、修辞；“四艺”数学、几何、音乐、天文）和阅读《圣经》等。
