讲座原稿 Part 1
Dennis: Good morning everyone. Well good evening to you in China. Thank you for being here tonight, it is truly an honor for me. I was really happy when William asked me to do this. Although it is my first time talking directly to a group of students and parents in China, I have met many excellent Chinese students and parents at the Brown campus over the years, so I have a sense of what is on everyone’s mind tonight, especially at this time of the year. I would like to share with all of you tonight on something about Brown University, in terms of what Brown is really about, what a true open curriculum is, what kind of students come to Brown. Also, I wish to give you some advice on my take of college planning.
As all of you probably know, this year’s early decision and early action season are coming to an end. Brown sent out over 500 hundred offers a couple of days ago, I don’t have the exact numbers, they are with the admission office, but I think about 8 students from mainland China got accepted under the early decision agreement. These are not big numbers at all, Brown is one of the most competitive schools in the U.S. Often times, people from all over the world ask me all the time what type of students I think is best suitable for Brown university, or have the best chance to be accepted, and there is really no easy answer to that question.
In 2018, over 2600 new students started their journey at Brown, including: 144 medical students, 826 graduate students, 66 transfer students, and 1657 first year undergraduate students. So I really don’t think there is any one type of person that should attend Brown. Students start their college careers being who they are, and often times, find themselves having completed tremendous self-transformation in as short as just one semester. The majority of Brown students speak what’s on their minds, become educated in so many things from politics to medical techniques. So trust me when I say this, anyone can fit in or attend Brown and be comfortable here, and really enjoy their experiences at Brown. Brown students come from every corner of the world, represent nearly every socioeconomic group, political persuasion, religious affiliation, and cultural background. Starting at Brown always has particularly special meaning for them and their families. Every one of them has a unique personal story and a distinctive set of talents that they bring to Brown. It’s the blend of these stories and talents that creates the magic that happens on the hills of Brown campus.
I am confident that I will be meeting quite a few of you from tonight at Providence in the near future. You will be joining in a very special community as it is reflected in our mission statement: “Brown being a partnership of students and teachers in a unified community.” But why do we call ourselves that, and in what sense are members of the Brown community unified.
This question is especially relevant now, not only because it gets at Brown’s essential character; but because we live at a time when U.S. — and many other countries around the world — seem anything but unified.
l Debates over immigration center on who has the right to live, work and be educated in this country.
l Debates about environmental policy force us to consider how we should weigh profits today against future costs to human health and wellbeing.
l Challenges to the use of race as one of many factors in college admissions are opening discussions on the role of higher education in promoting a just society—and demanding that we explore differences in our visions of what “justice” looks like.
If we don’t share the same views, then what does it mean to be a unified academic community at a time like this, a time of division and polarization?
To me, it comes down to standing for shared values.
Even as all of us embody a broad range of perspectives and worldviews, there is a core set of values that animate Brown University.
l The first is a dedication to seeking truth.
l The second is a belief that advancing knowledge and understanding is the path to a better world.
l And the third is a commitment to respecting human dignity.
Seeking truth. Knowledge in the service of society. Respect for human dignity. These are values that drive our actions each and every day; values that unify us. Truth turns the unknown into adventure; and that turn education into true learning. These values transform college into Brown – the lively experiment envisioned by the Brown Charter in 1764. And all students on campus, prospective students attracted by the Brown values, give me endless motivation and confidence. I trust all future Brown students will uphold these values, and I remain relentlessly optimistic about the future because of you.
Brown University is well known for its liberalistic tendencies. It has been said that it has the happiest college students known across the U.S. This sense of elation does not happen by chance, your positive attitude will contribute to this amazing atmosphere, so your personality is important. So, if I have to tell you in specific details of what kind of students Brown looks for, as requested by William, I would have to say, if you are someone who loves to live for, learn from, and be part of the Brown community, you should apply.
If you care a lot about learning for learning’s sake, but also like to spend some time hanging out with friends rather than locked in your room studying, you should apply. Your classmates at Brown will be easily as active on the extracurricular side of things as they are academically, and also tend to have a good social life. Brown students always have something going on the side, and isn’t a party animal or a study freak but knows how to do both.
If you have an open mind and an eager desire to learn, not just in the classroom but from the world around them as well, you should apply. A strong drive to work hard and do well is highly recommended at Brown, as you will always be pushed to do one’s best regardless of the classes you take.
If you are independent and looking for a challenge, willing to put a lot into your educational advancement; if you like to express yourself, Brown definitely is the perfect place for you to do it. Start your own student group (it’s easy) or join one that fights for your cause, anything goes. The Brown campus is an amazing place to become active in bettering the world around you. You have to be committed to get by. In essence, the more eccentric and unique you are the better fit you will be for Brown.
